Review: Murder She Didn’t Write. Royal & Derngate.

After more than 13 years since their first show, Murder, She Didn’t Write is once again on tour and filling audiences with laughter up and down the UK. This play is a hilarious spin on the classic murder mystery that we all know and love.

However, no two nights will ever be the same.

Every night, the Degrees of Error act out a new storyline based on key plot points that are determined by the audience members themselves. Agatha Crusty (Lizzy Skrzypiec) is our detective who is on stage with us the whole time and hilariously helps us solve the murder of the night. She selects one lucky audience member to be her assistant, Jerkins. From this moment on, Jerkins has all of the power in their hands as they choose the setting, murder weapon, the victim and the murderer.

From the get-go, the actors dive straight into their roles and the scene is set. The first act intends to put the wheels in motion for what is to follow. Many random details are provided by each actor. The quick wit of all the cast members is impeccable and has everybody laughing.

At points it feels as if things may have gotten out of control however, our Detective quickly regains control and amazingly manages a balance between a comedy show and the classic ‘whodunit’. She then moves on to steal the show by explaining which actor committed the murder. It is delivered with such conviction that there is no doubt about who the suspect is.

The design of the set by Justin Williams is one that works with every possible plot given. The lighting and sound (Adam King and Lucy Baker-Swinburn) are also a crucial part of the show. The music performed on-stage by Sara Garrard is precise and never fails to match the chaos unfolding.

This has to be probably the funniest show I have seen in theatre, and I am sure that each and every person in the audience would agree. I highly recommend that you give it a watch.
