English Youth Ballet
Sleeping Beauty – Theatre Royal Nottingham Fri 22 – Sat 23 July 2022
There will be three performances of EYB’s acclaimed ballet, Sleeping Beauty, at the Theatre Royal Nottingham from Friday 22 to Saturday 23 July. The lavish production will star six international principal dancers and showcase the talents of seventy young dancers from the local area.
English Youth Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty production is sumptuous, promising tradition alongside innovation. The ballet’s essence is good gloriously triumphant over evil. In Act 1, at Aurora’s Christening, the relatives present gifts to the baby, but it is interrupted by wicked Aunt Carabosse who places a curse upon Aurora. To reverse the curse, the good Aunt Lilac places Aurora, her family and guests in the Palace Gardens in a cryogenic frozen state to sleep for one hundred years. The Cryonite Fairies protect her until she is awakened by her Prince. Upon his kiss, the curse is lifted and Carabosse is defeated.
Tickets are available from the Box Office on 0115 989 5555 or at www.trch.co.uk
The cast were selected in a big online audition where videos of the young dancers had to be submitted to English Youth Ballet. Over 150 young dancers auditioned for the opportunity.
The young cast will have rehearsed for 60 hours over 10 days of rehearsals at weekends. The rehearsals take place at Rushcliffe Spencer Academy. At rehearsals, the dancers experience the working life of a professional dancer. EYB take over 3 large rehearsal spaces in the school that are used simultaneously. Rehearsals always start with 3 company classes for the dancers to warm-up. The dancers need to keep an eye on the complex rehearsal timetable throughout the day.
Quote from Janet Lewis MBE (EYB Director)
“The cast have shown great enthusiasm and excitement in their Sleeping Beauty rehearsals. The children are obviously so pleased to be back dancing again and taking part in a ballet that they love. Since the past year of lockdowns with the many restrictions, they are displaying a sense of freedom that is boosting their self-confidence and wellbeing. The cast are working hard not only on their ballet technique but on their performance quality that expresses the part they are dancing. The incentive is to be back performing again in the theatre.”
Award-winning English Youth Ballet

EYB principal dancers are of the highest calibre and have joined EYB from companies such as English National Ballet, Northern Ballet and KBallet. The young dancers are some of the top talents from the local area. There are now ex-EYB young performers in some of the world’s best companies – including the Royal Ballet.
