A captivating Sufi myth told through dance and music, Songs of the Bulbul offered a beautiful, mesmerising and refreshingly different hour of theatre.

The performance opens in darkness as a narrator recounts the story of the bulbul, or nightingale. Captured and gradually blinded, the bird pours its heart into its song until it is finally released through death, allowing its spirit to soar free.

Aakash Odedra delivers a spellbinding solo performance, combining contemporary dance with influences from traditional Indian movement. Accompanied by Rushil Ranjan’s haunting musical score, Odedra spins, swoops and glides across the stage in a simple white, wing-like costume, his movements evoking the grace and fragility of a caged bird.

The staging is strikingly simple yet incredibly effective. Candlelight flickers around a wooden cage while red petals drift gently from above, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The lighting design deserves particular praise, with moments of strobe lighting freeze-framing the dancer in mid-motion to create a series of haunting tableaux.

The performance is both joyful and heartbreaking. Through movement alone, Odedra conveys the bird’s struggle, resilience and final liberation, taking the audience on an emotional journey that culminates in a moving sense of transcendence.

The audience was visibly enthralled, rewarding Odedra with a thoroughly deserved standing ovation. Songs of the Bulbul is a visually stunning and deeply affecting production that lingers in the mind long after the final note has faded. Sadly it was here in Cambridge for only one performance.
