Horrible Histories: Awful Egyptians
Many of us have grown up with Terry Deary’s Horrible Histories making history exciting for children. And so, it was only inevitable that it would be brought to the stage.
Birmingham Stage Company’s take on the ‘Awful Egyptians’ is great fun for the children in the audience. The cast succeed in getting the story of the Egyptians across to the audience in a funny, light-hearted way.
Rob Cummings, Jack Ballard and Megan Parry deserve much credit for being able to successfully deliver history in a way that keeps the young children engaged the whole time. Combining a mix of comedy pantomime, the amazing ‘Bogglevision’ as well as clear narration, the cast provide a great piece of children’s theatre.
They may not include all of the details but they certainly add bits that we didn’t learn at school and, a few hints of rudeness and crudeness leaves something for the adults in the room to enjoy too.
The same cast and crew also perform the ‘Terrible Tudors’, which takes the audience from the banks of the River Nile to the horrible Henries and the end of evil Elizabeth.
This fun-packed show runs at the Royal and Derngate until Saturday, providing the perfect half-term entertainment.
