Review: BIRTH at Nottingham Playhouse: A unique performance experience by Theatre Re.

Photography by Pamela Raith.

If ever there was a virtually non-verbal professional physical theatre work that was created to extend conversations post performance with audience members, or in a college classroom of intelligent young people then Theatre Re’s astounding show BIRTH would be 100% it.

BIRTH is the story of Sue, Katherine and Emily, three generations of women from the same family whose lives are part of an invisible web they help to weave. It traces their journey of self-discovery, acceptance and hope. It is conceived and directed by Guillaume Pigé. The short pieces of spoken word and emotional vocalizations frame the family connections.

Featuring a small cast of extraordinarily expressive performers BIRTH is given life to by Ludovica Tagariello (Emily), Vyet Garriga (Suzanne), Claudia Marciano (Katherine), Sam Morris (George and James), Boing Yuen (Sam). All offer us organically creative performances as names individuals and movement ensemble alike. The combined artistic work on stage is brilliantly augmented by composer and multi instrumentalist Alex Judd’s original and haunting score and Katherine Graham and Ross Hayward’s stunning lighting design. From beginning to end this seventy-minute performance is an epic life-changing experience, powerfully moving, often surprising, and sharp. It is both joyous and traumatic : a transitionally perfect theatrical gift to this awe-struck Nottingham Playhouse audience. What a unique performance experience by Theatre Re!

At Nottingham Playhouse for March 17th 2025 only.

  1. Katherine Graham says:

Thanks for the lovely review! One quick correction: the lighting is actually a co-design between Katherine Graham and Ross Hayward.
