Set in the future where live music has been mostly expunged out of all memory We Will Rock You looks with a knowing wit and tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and live music. Their world is a distant future, internet and social media governed, existence where everyone thinks, dresses and acts the same. Musical instruments and composers are totally forbidden and rock music is all but unknown.

Written by Queen and Ben Elton We Will Rock You has been wowing audiences since the West End debut in 2002 and has been seen in one form or another worldwide. It’s music and social media references are constantly updated so that all performances are super relatable.

It has won many awards including What’s On Stage Best Musical (2003), the Dora Award for Outstanding production of a musical in Canada (2007) and the Olivier Audience Award for Most Popular Show (2011). The original production was choreographed by Arlene Phillips and the show we are seeing tonight, choreographed by Lajos Túri Péter and directed by Cornelius Baltus definitely echoes that original raunchy dance flair.

Given its opening night performance at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall it is obvious why it is and has been a big hit amongst audiences worldwide. It is extremely spectacular in its presentation as it utilises much of the best visual projections currently available. The singing and musicianship is thrilling and the dynamic performances by the hard working ensemble and leads Michael McKell (Buddy), Adam Strong (Khashoggi), Ian McIntosh (Galileo), Elena Skye (Scaramouche), Jenny O’Leary (Killer Queen), David Michael Johnson (Brit) and Amy Di Bartolomeo (Oz) are to die for. And it features twenty-five songs by Queen. It’s A Kind of Magic!

We Will Rock You runs at Nottingham Theatre Royal Mon 25 – Sat 30 Nov.
