Derby Theatre to launch D/deaf-friendly Youth Theatre
Derby Theatre is absolutely thrilled to be launching a D/deaf-Friendly Youth Theatre group this autumn.
The D/deaf-Friendly Youth Theatre group will be a fully accessible theatre group for young people who are D/deaf, deafened or hard of hearing, and their friends/siblings and will be a perfect opportunity to develop confidence, range of expression and performance skills. The Youth Theatre will be suitable for young people aged 11-18 and the group will work towards creating their own accessible and innovative performance which will be shared as part of a Derby Theatre Family Open Day on Saturday 16 March 2019.
The Youth Theatre will be run and supported by professional practitioners where BSL communication and interpretation will be provided at each session. The group will run fortnightly over two terms at Derby Theatre, from 5pm until 6.30pm.
The sessions will run on Wednesdays on the following dates: 26 Sep, 10 Oct, 24 Oct, 7 Nov, 21 Nov, 5 Dec, 16 Jan, 30 Jan, 13 Feb, 27 Feb, 13 Mar and 27 Mar. The D/deaf-Friendly Youth Theatre will initially be a two-term project with an ambition of continuing and developing further beyond this period.
Nicola Bellenger (Young Artists and Participation Producer) said: “We’re so pleased to be able to launch the D/deaf-Friendly Youth Theatre this year, which will become an integral part of our offer for children and young people. As a learning theatre, we strive to make our programme and participation opportunities accessible to as many people as possible, and so this is a crucial step in widening access to our learning activities.
There has already been an encouraging expression of interest, so we’re looking forward to seeing the group form, grow and flourish and become a brilliant addition to our programme”.
