As part of a European theatre exchange arrangement, Nottingham’s top amateur theatre venue, The Lace Market Theatre, will be hosting two amateur theatre groups at the end of May 2026. The companies are from Karlsruhe, Nottingham’s twin city in Germany. Bernard Slade’s comedy ‘Same Time, Next Year’ will be presented by the Jakobus Theater with three performances on 27th and 28th May. The Theater Die Käuze is playing Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘Comic Potential’ on 25th and 26th May 2026.
Both plays are in the German language and the tickets are free but must be booked in advance. Both plays are currently playing to full audiences in Karlsruhe.
Same Time, Next Year plot.
Doris and George, both married (but not to each other!), meet by chance in a California hotel and spend the night together. What begins as a one-off weekend fling develops over the years into "a lifetime of weekends"... Bernard Slade describes with humour and empathy the extraordinary relationship of two people who, although unable to live together, accompany each other on their respective life journeys with love and friendship. They love each other, they argue, they break up—and yet they always find each other again... the following year—at the same time.
Doris und George, beide verheiratet (jedoch nicht miteinander!), lernen sich durch Zufall in einem Hotel in Kalifornien kennen und verbringen die Nacht miteinander. Was zunächst ein einmaliges Wochenendabenteuer bleiben soll, entwickelt sich im Laufe der Jahre zu „einem ganzen Leben voller Wochenenden“... Bernard Slade beschreibt mit viel Humor und Einfühlungsvermögen die außergewöhnliche Beziehung zweier Menschen, die zwar nicht miteinander leben können, sich aber auf ihrem jeweiligen Lebensweg in Liebe und Freundschaft begleiten. Sie lieben sich, sie streiten sich, sie trennen sich – und finden sich doch immer wieder... im nächsten Jahr – zur gleichen Zeit!

Comic Potential plot
The filming of the umpteenth episode of a hospital series, in which computer-controlled actuators are now used instead of actors. However, one of them, JCF 31333, called “Jacie”, is prone to outbursts of hilarity and other crashes – for the director it is a programming error, the young assistant Adam sees a real comic talent in it. Secretly, he teaches Jacie old comedy standards, falls in love with her and wants to integrate her into his real life. Not really equipped for reality, Jacie turns out to be far more human than her creators with her artificial intelligence.
With wordplay, situational comedy but also thoughtful moments, Ayckbourn’s comedy about artificial intelligence is also frighteningly topical.

Die Dreharbeiten zur x-ten Folge einer Krankenhaus-Serie, in der mittlerweile statt Schauspielern computergesteuerte Aktroiden eingesetzt werden. Einer von ihnen, JCF 31333, genannt „Jacie“, neigt allerdings zu Heiterkeitsausbrüchen und anderen Abstürzen – für den Regisseur ist es ein Programmierfehler, der junge Assistent Adam sieht darin ein echtes komisches Talent. Heimlich bringt er Jacie alte Comedy-Standards bei, verliebt sich in sie und will sie in sein reales Leben integrieren. Für die Wirklichkeit eigentlich nicht ausgerüstet, entpuppt sich Jacie dabei mit ihrer künstlichen Intelligenz als weitaus menschlicher als ihre Schöpfer .
Mit Wortwitz, Situationskomik aber auch nachdenklichen Momenten, ist Ayckbourns Komödie über künstliche Intelligenz auch erschreckend aktuell.
