For their two night Nottingham run the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre present four dance pieces; Exodus, Four Corners, After the Rain Pas de Deux and the much loved Revelations. This reviewer is struck by the sheer beauty and soulfulness of all the dance pieces; the deft feather light footwork; the astounding artistry and execution of their dance vision and the joy and powerful strengths of every dancer. Breath-taking is hardly a description fit to describe this dance show.

… astounding artistry and execution…

The movement of each piece is deeply touching (especially Revelations) and the audience seem totally at one with the dance. Each member of this audience is caught up in admiration of the innate hard won craft unfolding before them on stage. You can hear a proverbial pin drop and should a real pin drop the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company would swiftly incorporate it into a dance. There is a real synergy of energy flowing back and forth between audience and performers like a current of human electricity that, subsumed and connected breaks out into wild applause at the end of each piece.

Their international repertoire incorporates over 235 works by over 90 choreographers and the Ailey company is world renowned having, in its lifetime, performed to over an estimated 25 Million people. This is dance worth waiting a lifetime for. If you haven’t got that long book tickets now!

I have waited 11 yrs to see them. I have a flier on my kitchen wall from 2005 when the were in Nottingham and promised I’d not miss them this time. The performances were mesmerising and powerful. There was sadness and humour , anger and joy. The mix of traditional and contemporary dance styles was great. I even thought I glimpsed a ‘whip and nah nah!!’ in EXODUS. Well worth it!! xxx jb
